Foundation Receives $50,000 Award from Felician Services, Inc.

The Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – Foundation for St. Francis and Franklin is proud to announce that it has received a grant award of $50,000 from Felician Services, Inc., in support of its Neurology Initiative at St. Francis Hospital.

With the recent addition of the Center for Neurological Disorders (CND) at St. Francis hospital, the Foundation for St. Francis and Franklin has an opportunity to provide services and support for a brand new patient population. These patients suffer from a wide range of neurological disorders, including stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the main service areas at the CND, as Wisconsin has one of the highest rates of patients with MS, the CND has one of the largest MS practices in the nation. 57 percent of these patients are on government-sponsored healthcare and come from diverse backgrounds. Our staff must overcome financial and cultural barriers in order to achieve best outcomes.

Patients travel from all over the state of Wisconsin and parts of Illinois to receive treatment at the CND in Milwaukee. As such, we have an opportunity to make a greater impact on the health and well-being of many that were outside of our reach prior to the addition of the CND at St. Francis.

Chair YogaThe Foundation’s new “Neurology Initiative” will enable us to provide services and support programs that complement medical treatments provided at the CND, including a quarterly patient education series, a Yoga Therapy for MS class taught by an MS-certified yoga instructor, direct assistance for patients unable to meet the financial burden of their therapeutic treatments, additional funding to assist impaired patients with mobility or other equipment for enhanced quality of life, and support groups for emotional relief.

While these programs are needed to provide important complementary services and support for patients suffering from debilitating neurologic disorders, the cause is also a mission-driven initiative that embodies the mission, vision, and values of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and Felician Services, demonstrating our shared values of compassion, transformation, and respect for human dignity.

Treatment for neurological disorders can be astronomically expensive. Medications alone can cost hundreds of dollars a month, even with insurance. We are incredibly grateful to Felician Services, Inc. for their generosity and commitment to removing barriers for vulnerable populations to access quality and affordable health care.
