Wheaton Franciscan One of 40 Area Organizations Participating in ‘It’s Quittin’ Time Wisconsin'

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare is among 40 area organizations participating in a state-wide, month-long effort to help smokers quit. The effort kicks off April 28.

Cigarette smoking is the single leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. Tobacco-related medical expenses cost Wisconsin residents $3 billion dollars annually and more than 7,000 deaths are associated with tobacco use each year statewide, said City of Milwaukee Commissioner of Health Bevan K. Baker.

This month, we urge smokers to talk to their health care providers about resources available to help them take a step toward quitting successfully.

Quit Smoking Resources

Talk to Your Primary Care Provider

The best way to overcome the physical and psychological addiction to nicotine that makes it difficult for smokers to quit is to talk to your primary care provider. Many resources and programs are available to help improve your chances of quitting successfully.

The most important first step is to talk to your primary care provider about your desire to quit. He or she is the best person to help guide you on how best to approach quitting, including available medications and other support.

If you need a primary care provider, search for one who's right for you.

Additional Resources

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare offers these additional resources to support you in your smoking cessation efforts:

According to the American Lung Association, most smokers try their first cigarette around the age of 11, and many are addicted by the time they turn 14. Talk to your children to help prevent young people from starting to smoke.
