Tips to Help You & Your Waistline Get through the Holidays

Trying to avoid holiday weight gain? The average American gains one to two pounds during the holiday season. But this seemingly inevitable weight gain is avoidable with some simple approaches to holiday eating.

Planning ahead for nutritional holiday eating will help you maintain a healthy weight. Remember, even one positive diet change can help contribute to your overall health and well-being.

Here are some tips to help you and your waistline throughout the holiday season:

  • Make Mindful Choices - Choose healthier foods that are low in fat and calories, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Check Your Portions - Have a smaller portion of the not-so-healthy foods you love, and conserve calories by skipping something else that's not as important to you.
  • Drink in Moderation - Two mixed drinks can contain 500 calories, but two glasses of cider or white wine have only 300 calories.
  • Stay Active - Try to plan time into each day for exercise and don't break your routine. Go for a walk with your loved ones after eating or offer to help clean up after a meal.

If you need help staying on track this holiday season and into next year, learn about nutrition counseling.
