Love Reigns: Staff & Community Come Together to Help Patient Celebrate 50th Anniversary
Many of us can count our most momentous and meaningful life occasions on one hand. One Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - St. Francis patient had been anxiously anticipating one such occasion. On Dec. 26, 2014, Dick was to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by a large gathering of friends and family. This celebration almost didn't happen, however, when Dick had to be rushed to St. Francis via ambulance on Dec. 19.
Dick had been battling health issues for many years but this sudden crisis was certainly not expected. After his initial trip to the hospital, he found himself back again just two days before his scheduled anniversary party. Dick and his wife began considering their options, including canceling the party, requesting a large amount of guests to visit Dick in his hospital room, and so on. It was at that point that St. Francis staff stepped in to ensure the party planned to celebrate the love this couple shared would go on.
Before they knew it, the hospital auditorium had been booked, punch was being ordered, tables were set up and party preparations were well underway. The original venue and catering for the party, di Carlo’s, generously agreed to deliver the meal to the hospital. With friends, family, hospital staff and community members coming together, the party went on and the celebration was more meaningful that the couple ever could have imagined it would be.
The couple was tremendously grateful not only that they were able to celebrate their love, but that they were able to do so under such untimely circumstances. In fact, they were so moved by the generosity of the staff, community, friends and family that they made a gift to the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – Foundation for St. Francis and Franklin in honor of the staff members who helped make their anniversary party possible. The gift was designated to the Cancer Care and Neurology Funds. Both are areas that Dick continues to receive tremendous care from.
