Heart, Soul & Irish Gold
This year’s Discover the Heart & Soul event took place on March 17 at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee West – that’s right, there was a bit of Irish luck involved this year! The event kicked off with a rousing performance from the Beglan Academy of Irish Dance.
Each year this free event offers the opportunity for members of the community, donors and friends to celebrate and support the mission of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and the programs and services that touch the lives of thousands of residents throughout Southeast Wisconsin.
Three patient families graciously told their courageous and inspiring stories. One of the families featured baby Finn. Prior to his birth, Finn’s parents were seen at the St. Joseph Campus Women’s Outpatient Center. What makes them unique is that both Finn’s parents are deaf. This adds another layer of care when medical providers need to communicate through an interpreter. After delivery, Finn spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), but we're pleased to report the entire family is doing great.
Another patient story featured a couple in which both individuals were diagnosed with cancer within a very short period of time. Our yoga therapy for cancer patients truly became a lifeline as they went through the cancer journey together.
The final story featured Touyia and his family. They shared their devastating story of the effects of drunk driving. Touyia was traveling with his two brothers and cousin when a drunk driver struck their vehicle and killed everyone except him. Touyia suffered a traumatic brain injury, is non-verbal and a quadriplegic. The support Touyia’s family and the rehabilitation department has provided him has allowed everyone to make the most of a devastating situation.
At the end of the event, guests were asked to make a contribution to the Wheaton Franciscan Foundations, which help support our healing mission, exceptional and compassionate care, and service to those most in need.
Discover the Heart & Soul is an annual event, and we hope to have you join us next year!
