Making Our Community Stronger. Healthier. Better.
Living and working throughout Southeast Wisconsin, we understand the needs of the underserved, the sick and the elderly. For 130 years we have worked to meet those needs in our community. Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s total benefit to the community in fiscal year 2011 was more than $108 million.
Programs reaching the underserved
- Community Care: Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare offers a charity care program known as Community Care that assists qualified individuals in financial need. In fiscal 2011 in Southeast Wisconsin, we provided $21.2 million in charity care, which is based on the actual cost of providing that care. Read stories about people we helped.
- St. Joseph Women’s Outpatient Center offers care for low-income women and their babies throughout pregnancy, delivery, and early parenting months. Mothers-to-be with no other resources receive top-notch care, resulting in improved birth weights and reduced prematurity and infant mortality. The Center also offers life-saving gynecological screenings for breast, cervical, and other reproductive system cancers.
- All Saints Mother Clara Healthy Connections clinic has served the poor in the Racine community since 2006. The clinic is run by a registered nurse who sees patients who have been referred for further education and support based on their health care needs such as prenatal care, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking cessation.

Promoting health in our communities
- Baby Safe Sleep at St. Joseph and St. Francis: This program provides new mothers with t-shirts and sleepers for their newborns that say “This Side Up,” information on safe sleep and the dangers of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and a “New Beginnings” booklet, and Pack-n-Play portable cribs. The donations to hundreds of low-income families reinforce safe-sleep practices and promote safe sleep conditions at home.
- Barbershop Men’s Health Initiative is an innovative partnership between Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and barbers in the African-American community to increase awareness of important health issues in Milwaukee’s central city. Since 2005, barbers have been having one-on-one conversations with their patrons about their health and giving them resources to help them access care and eliminate disparities.
- Racine Area Public Access Defibrillator Program (PAD) helps to prevent sudden cardiac arrest, one of the leading causes of death in America claiming more than 250,000 lives each year. All Saints has provided defibrillators in more than 100 businesses, organizations, schools, and churches. If the heart is shocked quickly with a defibrillator, a normal heart rhythm can be restored, but for every one minute in defibrillation delay, the chance of survival is reduced by 10%.
