Latest Mammography Technology for Breast Cancer Detection

Dr. Kate Hallenbeck, Radiologist and Breast Imaging Specialist with Milwaukee Radiology serving Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, talks about the newest innovative tools available for the early detection of breast cancer, including 3D mammography imaging. These technologies and the experts who use them are leading to better detection of breast cancer at earlier stages when it's most treatable.

3D Mammography

Also called tomosynthesis, 3D mammography provides you with a new level of detection and peace of mind! It’s the latest technology in detecting early stage breast cancer. Tomosynthesis converts digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers or "slices" that produce a 3D image to help the radiologist look even closer at breast tissue than ever before. This new technology produces 15 images of multiple angles of the breast, doctors can view each layer of breast tissue one millimeter at a time.

3D mammography can:

  • Help detect cancer when breasts are dense
  • Be used in both screening and diagnostic mammography
  • Reduce the number of call-backs and possible biopsies

Frequently Asked Questions About 3D Mammography

Not sure what 3D mammography is or if it’s right for you? View answers to frequently asked questions by patients.

What is a 3D mammography?

3D mammography is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that is packaged with a traditional 2D digital mammogram. During the 3D portion of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images. A computer then produces a 3D image of the breast tissue in one millimeter slices.

What are the benefits of a 3D mammogram?

Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of normal breast tissue looking like an abnormal area. By showing the breast tissue in one millimeter slices, the 3D imagery helps radiologists and physicians identify cancers previously missed.

Is a 3D mammogram any different than 2D?

No, 3D mammography complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time with the same system. No additional compression is required, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view.

Is there more radiation from 3D mammography?

There is slightly more dose than with a digital mammogram, but the total dose is not higher than a film/screen mammogram.

Who can have a 3D mammogram?

3D mammography is appropriate for all women undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings.

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography is an effective way to screen for and detect breast cancer and offers several advantages over film images, including:

  • Easier to read, helping radiologists make accurate diagnosis
  • Covers a larger dynamic range of all areas of the breast, despite varying densities
  • Can reduce the need for another mammogram
  • Can be stored and transferred electronically
