Speech Therapy

Wheaton Franciscan Rehabilitation Services provides a full array of cognitive, communicative and swallowing therapies and services.

Cognitive Disorders

Experienced therapists provide direction, compensatory strategies, and memory techniques that can make the difference between independent living and dependence on others. Examples of cognitive deficits that can be treated include changes in memory, problem solving and reasoning abilities; orientation, attention, and concentration skills; or a lack of insight or awareness of physical/cognitive deficits.

Language Disorders

Our expert clinicians are skilled in the comprehensive individualized assessment and treatment of language disorders, including expression, comprehension, visual recognition, writing, and non-verbal expression (including various technological assistive devices).

Motor-Speech Disorders

Wheaton Franciscan Rehabilitation Services speech-language pathologists provide intensive and comprehensive oral-motor exercise programs that can help patients overcome dysarthria and apraxia, motor speech disorders that interfere with producing speech sounds and maintaining rhythm and fluency in speech production. Various techniques and motor coordination strategies can be implemented with patients to improve expressive skills.

Pediatric Speech Therapy

We provide a broad scope of pediatric speech therapy services for infants and children, from birth through adolescence. Our pediatric speech-language pathologists address pediatric swallowing and feeding, including fluoroscopic swallow studies when indicated.

They are specially trained to meet the challenging needs of infants, including preterm, at risk and medically fragile infants to support child development. They also partner with parents, teachers and other professionals to build the communication skills critical for success in school and at home.

Swallowing Disorders

Specially trained speech-language pathologists use a variety of evaluation and treatment tools, including fluoroscopic assessment, Vital Stim® assisted therapy, exercises to increase strength and range of motion, and compensatory techniques that are designed to maximize safety and efficiency when eating or drinking. Because of the life-threatening nature of swallowing disorders, early intervention is crucial in preventing pulmonary complications, malnutrition, dehydration, or death.

Voice Disorders

Wheaton Franciscan Rehabilitation Services speech-language pathologists are trained in perceptual and instrumental evaluation and treatment of voice disorders, including vocal cord paralysis, laryngeal dyskinesia, voicing problems following laryngeal surgery, voice problems related to Parkinson’s Disease, and functional voice disorders including vocal fold nodules.
