Epilepsy & Seizure Care

Understanding and managing your epilepsy isn't a journey you need to take alone. At Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, you can count on our nationally accredited epilepsy program and electroencephalogram (EEG) lab to provide you with high-quality care and effective treatment options. This includes access to the newest medication, testing and treatment options, as well as health and wellness management.

Epilepsy & Seizure Diagnosis

While epilepsy can develop at any age, it most commonly appears in childhood or after age 65. Your family medical history, a physical examination, blood tests and neurological exams—typically EEGs, which record your brain's electrical activity—help our team identify your symptoms and make a diagnosis.

Level 3 Accredited Epilepsy Center at All Saints

As one of only six accredited epilepsy centers in Wisconsin, All Saints provides you and your loved ones with high-quality, specialized epilepsy and seizure care. You'll benefit from seeing one of the few epileptologists (neurologist who specializes in treating epilepsy) in the state as well as advanced diagnostic and treatment options available.

To learn more about the accreditation, visit the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) website.

Epilepsy Treatment Options

Treating your epilepsy or seizures is vital to improving your quality of life. At Wheaton, you'll get advanced treatment options to help you live life to the fullest, including:

  • Antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) medication – Controls seizures by suppressing abnormal electrical activity in your brain
  • Nutrition counseling – Assists in health management and may contribute to decreased frequency of seizures
  • Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) – Interrupts the abnormal electrical circuits in your brain that cause seizures by stimulating a nerve in your neck; an effective treatment option if your epilepsy hasn't yet been controlled with medication
  • Surgery
