Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy & Hormone Therapy

If your cancer treatment plan includes medications—including chemotherapy and biotherapy—rest assured you can stay close to home to receive high-quality treatment at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare.

Drug Treatments for Cancer

Your treatment plan may incorporate one or more of the following pharmaceutical treatments for cancer:

  • Chemotherapy – Delivers medication most often through an intravenous (IV) infusion, but sometimes via a pill or injection to stop cancer cells from growing and reproducing
  • Immunotherapy (biotherapy) – Uses your body’s own immune system to fight cancer and infection.
  • Hormone therapy – Kills or slows the growth of cancer cells by decreasing or blocking certain hormones in your body

Drug treatments are systemic, which means they reach and can affect cells all over your body. You can count on your care team to answer questions about your treatment and help you manage side effects. Learn about our support services.

What To Expect During Chemotherapy

If you’re getting chemotherapy intravenously, you’ll receive the drugs through an IV that’s typically placed in a vein in your arm or hand. Please wear comfortable clothes and a shirt with short sleeves or sleeves that are easy to roll up.

Treatments may last 30 minutes to a few hours, so you’re encouraged to bring snacks, reading materials, puzzles, or other activities to help pass the time. You may even bring music and headphones. Your care team will make sure you are comfortable in our chemotherapy areas.
