Julian E. De Lia, MD, FACOG, FACS

Dr. De Lia began investigating TTTS in 1983 and pioneered fetoscopic placental laser surgery in 1988 at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. He subsequently brought his life-saving surgery to Wisconsin and Illinois.

His Practice and Research

Since that time, he has treated patients from 43 states and two Canadian provinces. Dr. De Lia has also consulted with patients and physicians from 48 states and 30 countries. He has also made significant contributions to the understanding of nutritional and cervical abnormalities in TTTS mothers. Dr. De Lia’s laser procedure is now performed (with some modifications) throughout the United States and the rest of the world.

He has received many awards for his pioneering work in TTTS including:

  • American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists/Ethicon Research Award for Innovations in Gynecologic Surgery

  • Saving Babies Together Prevention Award, March of Dimes.

  • Named by his peers as one of the four pioneers of maternal-fetal surgery.

  • Matthew J. Bulfin Research Award from the American Association of Pro Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

  • Gemini Award from The Center for the Study of Multiple Birth  

The connections Dr. De Lia has made with his patients are invaluable. Families frequently share their life milestones with him, the physician who made their children's healthy lives possible.
