Ultrasound imaging, sometimes called sonography, uses high frequency sound waves to look inside your body. Those sound waves reflect off bones, muscles, organs and other parts of your body to deliver an image that can be watched in real-time.
You may be familiar with ultrasound from the picture it gave you of your baby in the womb. But it can also be helpful in a number of other areas. It may be used to direct biopsies (when a piece of tissue is removed from your body for use in diagnosis) or check for blood clots and plaque buildup within your blood vessels.
Ultrasounds are usually painless and take less than 30 minutes to complete.
