Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine procedure that produces three dimensional images of the body's biological functions. It's an important tool used heavily to diagnose certain types of brain diseases, cancerous tumors and various types of dementia.
PET is unique because it can detect certain diseases much earlier than other types of imaging, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). That's because while a CT and MRI visualize gross anatomy and structural changes, a PET captures chemical and physiological changes related to metabolism.
You can rest assured that you will receive excellent service when you get your PET scan at a Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare facility. All of the nuclear medicine technologists are board certified by the NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board) and are required to remain constantly competent through required continuing education. All facilities are JCAHO accredited and both Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - St. Joseph and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - Elmbrook Memorial are accredited by ICANL (The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories.)
