The Joint Institutional Review Board (Joint IRB) is an administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare–Iowa and other local affiliated institutions. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications in, or disapprove all research activities that fall within its jurisdiction as specified by both the federal regulations and local institutional policy.

Each member of the research team interacting with human subjects must complete an educational tutorial on the protection of human subjects. A copy of the tutorial completion certificate must be submitted to the IRB.
The Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare IRB currently recognizes completion of the on-line NIH tutorial as satisfaction for this training. CITI certification is also an acceptable form of training
