A Bariatric Center of Excellence

Designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence requires significant and intensive examination, quality outcomes and an infrastructure in place that supports all the needs, both physical and emotional, of the bariatric patient.

To earn its Center of Excellence designation, Elmbrook Memorial and its partnering physician group, the Bariatric Institute of Wisconsin, routinely undergo a series of stringent site inspections by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).

The ASBS Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the quality and care provided. The process to earn a Center of Excellence is rigorous and extensive. To qualify, a facility must undergo site inspections and consistently meet the safety criteria, surgical processes, and patient outcome standards set forth by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an organization committed to surgical excellence. Only those physicians and facilities whose practices and outcomes meet the stringent demands set forth by SRC and ASBS are awarded Center of Excellence status.

Elmbrook Memorial offers a comprehensive bariatric surgical weight loss program including free monthly weight loss surgery support group meetings, free weight loss surgery seminars presented by the specializing surgeons and a bariatric coordinator that follows the patient all the way through their surgical experience.

When you choose Elmbrook Memorial, you have the confidence that this hospital and its surgeons are experts in the field of bariatric surgery.

All designated Bariatric Centers of Excellence must have a bariatric surgery coordinator, personnel dedicated to data entry into proprietary databases, personnel devoted to following up patients long term and subscription to one of the database services used to track outcomes.

“Bariatric surgery is a last resort for morbidly obese patients, not a quick fix, and is effective when paired with such life-style changes as diet and exercise,” noted Dr. Steven M. Clark, surgical co-director, adding, “Surgery is just one component of the program. We also provide psychological evaluations, nutritional counseling, support groups and follow-up care that helps patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery.”
