A journey sad, but not lonely

“When an organization has a Mission statement that their associates live out with professionalism, without complaint, and with enthusiasm as a team, then you know you have captured the true value of your company. I feel this way about Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare.”

Sharon Pianka wrote those words in a letter about the care her mother Arline received during her two-year battle with an inoperable heart condition. Arline’s journey took her from initial treatment at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare–St. Francis to the hospital’s extended care facility, The Terrace at St. Francis.

“Mom’s aide Ava Edmund was a Godsend,” wrote Sharon.“Administrative Nurse Denise Szuslik was so knowledgeable and compassionate; never too busy to ease our fears.”

After Arline suffered a stroke, Denise recommended hospice care. “You don’t want to accept how bad it is,” says Sharon. “Denise was the one that encouraged us.” A week later, Arline passed away comfortably in the middle of the night.

“Both Ava and Denise called us personally to express their condolences,” says Sharon. “We were really touched.”
