After two months in Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – St. Joseph’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), baby Khamayia, born at 28 weeks, is heading home with her mother, Quiana Highshaw.
“The St. Joseph NICU staff gave me so much encouragement. At first, I thought I couldn’t do this,” recalls Quiana. “Khamayia started out so well, but then slipped back.”
St. Joseph’s 49-bed NICU serves 700 infants each year. Twenty-five hospitals throughout eastern Wisconsin transfer their sickest mothers and infants here for treatment.
“The nurses and social worker told me to hold out,” Quiana continues. “They worked with me throughout the ordeal and gave me so much support. After two months exactly, here we are ready to go home. I’m so happy and excited. I couldn’t wait for this day to come.”
