Latest Treatments

Sinus Surgery
Most cases of sinus-related diseases can be treated with medicines.  However, in some cases surgery may also be needed.  Newer less invasive surgeries are now used.  The most common type of surgery is called Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS).

FESS is a minimally invasive technique performed under the magnification of a small telescopic endoscope to remove diseased tissue and open the sinuses to allow them to drain more naturally.  New techniques employed in FESS make this procedure much less invasive than it was even five years ago.  Nasal packing is rarely used and most patients are able to return to work or school in 48 hours.

Computer Guided Surgery
The use of special surgical navigation/computer guided technology can decrease complications and improve results.  Three-dimensional images of a patient’s sinuses are uploaded to a computerized navigation system.  Surgeons are able to track their progress to the millimeter during surgery.

Balloon Sinuplasty
Balloon sinuplasty is a break-through technology in sinus care.  Doctors thread a guide wire equipped with a tiny balloon into the nostrils and up to the blockage. The balloon is then inflated about a quarter of an inch — just enough to stretch and open the passageway. The balloon is then deflated and withdrawn.  Unlike traditional sinus surgery, sinuplasty is minimally invasive. After sinuplasty, sinus openings become significantly wider and in most cases, they stay that way.

Coblation Procedure
Tonsil removal and nasal obstruction can be treated with coblation (cold ablation) technology.  Surgery using coblation technology creates virtually no heat which equals decreased pain and scarring.  Nasal packing is no longer routinely used.

Sinus Nebulization Therapy
A nebulizer turns liquid medicine into a mist.  Through sinus nebulization, medications can be delivered directly to the surface of the nose and sinuses.

Ear, Throat and Voice Problems

Elmbrook Memorial’s Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) physicians can treat an extensive array of ear, nose, throat and voice issues including adenoiditis, chronic ear problems and infections, hearing loss, hoarseness and hyper nasal speech, nasal deformities and obstruction, sinusitis and tonsillitis.

Our Comprehensive Voice and Swallowing Center offers expertise and technology to address and treat most voice and swallowing disorders.  ENTs, along with neurologists, speech-language pathologists and other caring experts have the skill and experience to provide optimal care.

Comprehensive voice and swallowing services are available at the Elmbrook Medical Arts Center, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – St. Joseph and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – St. Francis.

Pediatric Services

Our Board-Certified ENT physicians treat infants, children and adolescents for a variety of ear, nose and throat conditions including malformations of the ear, nose and throat, treatment for airway problems, cleft palate, congenital abnormalities of the ear and infectious diseases of the sinuses, tonsils, and adenoids.

Our surgical staff understands that coming to the hospital can be an overwhelming experience for children and families and will work to ensure a comfortable, safe and caring experience.  We are equipped to manage all types of pediatric otologic conditions ranging from chronic ear and tonsil infections to hearing loss requiring cochlear implantation.

Pediatric Anesthesia
Elmbrook Memorial is proud to staff Board-Certified anesthesiologists who are specially trained and have extensive experience in administering anesthesia to infants and children.  Many of our pediatric ENT patients are able to bypass the recovery room, reuniting sooner with their parents and allowing for an earlier discharge home and a more enjoyable operative experience for the family.
