Personalized Pain Management
Orthopedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of the body's musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Although disorders such as joint degeneration or a torn ligament may require surgical intervention, many patients with orthopedic problems are successfully treated without surgery. Our physicians design a treatment plan that is personalized to your individual needs –whatever your age and physical condition.
Specialized Orthopedic programs and services at Elmbrook Memorial include:
Our continuum of orthopedic care includes outpatient rehabilitation services, home care and educational programs that showcase new therapies while encouraging injury and disease prevention.
Minimally-invasive Approach, Faster Healing
Elmbrook Memorial’s orthopedic and neurosurgeons perform some of the most complex and advanced procedures involving hip, knee, joint replacement, spine, arthroscopic, hand, shoulder, foot and ankle surgery.
Using the latest technology and treatment skills, many orthopedic procedures are performed arthroscopically – without the need for large incisions. This minimally-invasive approach leads to faster healing, faster recovery and smaller scars.
Joint Replacement Surgery
When cartilage in a joint becomes damaged by disease or injury, the tissues around the joint become inflamed, causing pain and a breakdown of healthy tissue. Common causes leading to a hip or knee replacement include:
Using the latest technology and surgical techniques, our highly skilled orthopedic surgeons relieve pain and restore joint functions for thousands of patients each year.
When only some of the joint is damaged, a surgeon may be able to repair or replace just the damaged parts. When the entire joint is damaged, a total joint replacement is done. Some patients may be candidates for “mini-incision” hip replacement surgery, which involves a smaller incision and faster recovery time.
Cartilage Repair
Normal knee function requires a smooth gliding surface on the ends of the bones. This surface is composed of a thin layer of slippery, tough tissue called cartilage. This cartilage also acts to distribute force during repetitive pounding-like movements such as jumping or running.
To help restore damaged cartilage and maximize patient functionality, we provide a full spectrum of contemporary treatments matched to the patient's lifestyle. These range from arthroscopic repair, to revision of the joint and cartilage and possibly, total joint repair or cartilage regeneration.
Spine and Back Care
Elmbrook Memorial neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists (doctors who specialize in physical rehabilitation), pinpoint and treat the sources of spine, back and neck pain while offering the latest, most innovative non-surgical and surgical treatment options.
Ankle and Foot Care
Elmbrook Memorial’s surgeons and podiatrists who are foot and ankle specialists care for patients with sports injuries and work-related problems, as well as those with foot disorders caused by arthritis, diabetes and other conditions. They use cutting-edge techniques to restore and improve movement, flexibility as well as manage or eliminate pain.
Hand, Wrist, Elbow & Shoulder Care
Even the most complex hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems can be treated and resolved at Elmbrook Memorial. Services include inpatient and outpatient surgery and treatment for:
Cruise into Recovery Program
An effective preadmission program is a major investment in a patient’s recovery. That’s why Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-Elmbrook Memorial encourages hip and knee replacement patients to attend its unique “Cruise into Recovery” program.
This free weekly class familiarizes you with our orthopedic unit. We will show you where your surgery and recovery will take place, introduce you to your care team (nurses, discharge specialists, therapists and more), and help you learn what to expect from your replacement and recovery. This will class will inform, lessen anxiety, and increase confidence for the patient and family prior to hospitalization.
Patients who are scheduled for joint replacement surgery (hip or knee) at Elmbrook Memorial will be able to attend this weekly class in lieu of a one-on-one appointment in Pre-Admission Testing.
As part of the class, we offer a complimentary box lunch for two. You are welcome to bring a spouse/relative/helper along to help absorb the information presented and assist in a successful recovery when returning home.
For more information on this class, contact the program director at (262) 785-2416.
Approximately 2 million knee injuries occur each year, with many involving the cartilage in the knee. Cartilage problems in knees, ankles and shoulders can also develop gradually over time as a result of degenerative joint disease or age-related usage
