Volunteer at All Saints

As a volunteer at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - All Saints you will feel appreciated and needed, meet many new people, learn new skills, have fun and much more.  Volunteers are individuals from all walks of life who are willing to devote time, knowledge and expertise to the service of others.  No special skills or experience is needed, just a desire to be of service and have enthusiasm to learn and a willingness to work under supervision.  Most volunteers give one four hour shift per week but some do more or less-we’re very flexible on schedules.  The minimum age requirement is 14 years old.

Clerical

Assist departments in a variety of clerical/receptionist tasks including answering telephones, filing, copying, light typing or data entry, stuffing envelopes and assisting staff:

Special Projects
Provide clerical or project assistance to departments needing help with mailing and collating projects on an occasional basis.

Collating and Mailings

Put together various information packets, charts and mailings for departments.  Tasks may include collating, sorting, folding, stuffing, stapling or tabbing.

Community Outreach

Blood Pressure
Free Community Clinics at various sites offered by volunteers who have taken the AHA Blood Pressure Class (class provided).

Children’s Program
Program of hands on activities for 2nd graders called “Children’s Introduction to Hospital Care” on one or two Thursdays each month during the school year.  Volunteers help lead the activities.

LifeLine
Emergency phone response system offering peace of mind to elderly and frail persons.  Volunteers help with clerical duties or installing equipment in new subscribers’ homes.

Telecare
Volunteers make short phone calls each morning between 8-9 a.m. to check-in with persons in the community who live alone and have no outside contact.

Distribution and Delivery

Mail Room
Patient mail is sorted and delivered by volunteers every morning. If a patient has been discharged, the volunteer forwards the mail.

Material Distribution
Volunteers put stock away, make patient charge tickets, pull and deliver supplies and equipment to floors. Knowledge of computer Windows programs is helpful.

Escort and Errand

Courtesy Van
The Courtesy Van circulates throughout the various Spring Street parking lots providing transportation to and from the buildings on campus.  Volunteer drivers work three hour shifts, M-F between the hours of 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. 

Menus
Each morning a menu goes up to the patient on the breakfast tray.  Volunteers visit the patient rooms between 9 -11 a.m. to collect the menu or help the patient fill out the menu.

Game Shows

SMILE
Volunteers host a closed circuit Bingo-type TV program broadcast to patient rooms on a weekly basis.  Volunteers hand out bingo cards and deliver prizes to the winners.

SCHWOBBLE
Volunteers host this Wheel of Fortune type TV program broadcast to patient rooms on a weekly basis during the school year. Volunteers hand out game sheets to patients and deliver prizes to winners.

Reception

Information Desk(s)
Volunteers provide directional guidance and may escort visitors to their destination.

ICU Waiting Room
Volunteers provide an avenue of communication between staff and family members/visitors. They also keep the waiting area neat and give direction.

Laboratory
Volunteer greeters assist clients coming into the Lab by giving direction to take a number and where to sit down. Volunteers also straighten up the waiting area. Good people skills and the ability to work independently are needed.

Patient Registration
Volunteers help patients begin the process of registering. While on duty they also escort patients to various areas. Filing and miscellaneous errands are also needed.

Surgical Services
Volunteers help patients check in for surgery. While on duty they also escort patients to various areas. Filing and miscellaneous errands are also needed.

Specialized Care Units

Cancer Center
Volunteers help with filing, copying and general errand tasks for staff.  They may also escort a patient to another area of the building. 

Hemodialysis Centers
Volunteers stock the patient areas, visit with patients during procedures and assist staff with clerical projects and errands.

Lakeshore Manor
Volunteers assist staff with group activities with residents or can become a one-to-one “Adopt-A-Resident” volunteer. Volunteers transport residents to and from groups and help with decorating the unit during holiday seasons. 

Spiritual Care Services

Parish callers
Every morning, volunteers telephone the various parishes to let them know what parishioners have been admitted to or discharged from our hospital the previous day.

Eucharistic Minister
Volunteers assist in the daily distribution of communion to patients.  Volunteer must be Catholic.

On-Call Chaplain
Specially trained volunteers become On-Call Chaplains to help us ensure that Spiritual Care Services are available to patients and their families at all times of the day and night.

Miscellaneous

Baby Hat Knitters
All newborns receive a cap knitted by a volunteer. The yarn/pattern is supplied. Volunteers knit at home.

Gift Shop
Volunteers sell boutique items to patients, staff and visitors. Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, Noon – 3 p.m.

Little Saints Child Care Center
Volunteers serve as a classroom assistant giving individual attention to children and helping the teacher with planned group activities and meals.  Volunteers need to be able to play with children and interact on their level.
