Conditions of the digestive system, or gastrointestinal (GI) tract, generally includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas and gall bladder.

Due to factors related to diet, environment and heredity, the digestive system or GI tract can be the site of numerous disorders.

Some of the most common diseases of the digestive system include: 
  • Ulcers: can develop in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum causing difficulty in swallowing, upper abdominal pain or indigestion 
  • Intestinal bleeding: hidden or massive bleeding can occur for various reasons 
  • Gastritis: inflammation of the lining of the stomach 
  • Gastroesophagael reflux disease (GERD): chronic inflammation of the esophagus due to reflux of stomach acid and digestive juices 
  • Crohn’s Disease/IBS/irritable bowel syndrome: inflammatory bowel disease 
  • Colitis: inflammation of the colon
  • Pancreatitis: inflammation of the pancreas which causes mild to severe abdominal pain 
  • Hiatal hernia: a condition in which part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm and up into the chest.
  • Diverticulitis: infection or inflammation caused by bulges in the wall of the intestine 
  • Esophageal varices: enlarged veins in the esophagus 
  • Abdominal pain
