Community Impact

Impacting the Lives of Every Patient

At Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – Franklin, we impact the lives of every patient who walks through our doors.

We have reached out to the community to help support the needs of our patients, families, and neighbors. We’re inspired by St. Francis of Assisi who taught us to reach out to others. To console. To understand. To love. And to be compassionate. Here are some examples of how we follow in his path.

Mental Health community workshops
Mental illness is among the most common health disorders, affecting nearly 10% of adults in Wisconsin every year. According to Mental Health AmericaSM, only half of those suffering from depression seek treatment.

But there is hope. With increased awareness of treatment options and local resources, 70% of individuals with depression have full remission of the disorder with effective treatment.

The Foundation for St. Francis and Franklin launched a series of four Mental Health Community Workshops aimed at increasing awareness about depression and lowering the stigmas associated with seeking treatment. With generous funding from The Charles E. Kubly Foundation, the sessions ranged from youth peer pressure and general depression warning signs to senior mental health challenges. One of the sessions was held at Franklin where private depression screenings with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Behavioral Health staff was available.

Environmental stewardship
Set into the surrounding prairie landscape, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – Franklin is a beacon of high-quality compassionate healthcare. The incorporation of natural construction materials, an ergonomic design, soothing paint colors, and a patient-focused building approach make this hospital unique among its peers. Reflected in a 90% patient satisfaction rate, the Franklin hospital was recognized at the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Dinner where we were awarded the coveted Pride in Premises Award for being environmentally friendly and using sustainable and renewable resources in both interior and exterior design.

Summer fun for kids
After opening its doors in 2008, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – Franklin is now opening its arms to collaborative opportunities that benefit the patients, families, neighbors, and businesses throughout the region. An exciting new day camp partnership was launched in the summer of 2009 with the YMCA. Over the course of 12 weeks and literally hundreds of activities, educational programs, and field trips, campers enjoyed the natural richness of the Franklin setting. As one of 15 community sites for YMCA camps, the Franklin site allowed for a new, convenient location for campers and families as well as substantial indoor and outdoor facilities. This continuing collaboration exemplifies the unity of the two organizations’ Missions, Visions, and Values while providing a new service for the community.

Encouraging kids to stay in school
Each year, Franklin hosts an inspirational educational series for Latino 8th grade students from three parochial schools on Milwaukee’s South Side. Key Latino leaders in the community, as well as staff from Franklin, discuss the importance of staying in school.
