Specialized Team Approach Helps Hospitalized Rehabilitation Patients Regain Independence
At Elmbrook Memorial, our Inpatient Rehabilitation program is designed to help return patients who have suffered severe illness or injury to a safe and functional lifestyle.
We build a specialized team around each patient that includes doctors, social workers, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists and specialists from many other disciplines - all with the goal of helping you regain your independence and confidence.
Our patients
Most of our patients have experienced a major illness or trauma, including but not limited to::
- Stroke
- Amputation
- Orthopedic injuries
- Fractures and joint replacements
- Arthritic conditions
- Debility
- Multiple sclerosis
- Non-traumatic spinal cord and brain injury

Our team
Our Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is managed by our Wheaton Franciscan Medical Group Physiatrists. These physicians are experts in functional rehabilitation, pain management and the unique circumstances created by longer-term rehabilitative care. They will work very closely with a specially designed team of rehabilitation experts, including:
- Rehabilitation Nurses
- Physical Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Speech-Language Pathologists
- Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
- Clinical Psychologists
- Pastoral Care Representatives
- Orthotics and Prosthetics specialists
- Registered Dieticians
This team works with patients to:
- assist in managing medications
- improve ability to walk, move and transfer in and out of bed or chairs
- improve balance and increase strength
- assist with medical equipment to maximize mobility
- achieve independence in daily activities such as dressing, bathing, grooming, eating, meal preparation and leisure/work activities
- improve communication skills such as speaking, following directions, reading, and writing
- identify and treat feeding and swallowing concerns
- address memory and problem solving issues
- develop skills for reentering the community using tools such as music, bowling, dog-assisted therapy and the use of interactive programs such as Wii™ game systems
