Bowel & Digestive Health

Signs and Symptoms of Digestive Health Disorders

Your digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube. It runs from your mouth to your anus and includes your esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines. Your liver, gallbladder and pancreas are also involved. They produce juices to help digestion.

There are many types of digestive disorders. The symptoms vary widely depending on the problem. In general, you should see your doctor if you have:
  • Persistent heartburn
  • Severe abdominal pain or cramping
  • Excessive vomiting or vomiting blood
  • Blood in your stool
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Excessive bloating or gas
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
Don’t ignore these symptoms. If you are concerned about a potential digestive health symptom, make an appointment with your primary care physician or a gastroenterologist, a physician who specializes in digestive diseases. Some of these symptoms may be life threatening if prolonged. If in doubt, call or visit the closest emergency department or call 911.
