How to Get the Most from Your Doctor Visits
Being proactive about your health care is the best step you can take toward wellness. Regular doctor visits are important and also give patients an opportunity to ask questions and get direct answers about health concerns.
Dr. Erin O'Tool specializes in Family Medicine and explains how to get the most from your doctor visit:
- At your doctor visit, bring along a list of any questions you have about your health. Be honest, and if you don’t clearly understand the answers, ask for clarification.
- When talking with your doctor, be honest, especially about any smoking, alcohol or drug use. When providing your health history, include as much information and background as possible.
- Visit your doctor when you have a health concern – but also on a regular basis (such as annually) to test for any signs of “hidden” diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Helping people address health risk factors before they develop a disease is the goal, and will help people live longer, happier lives.
