Lipidology

For people diagnosed with a lipid disorder or metabolic syndrome, the Wheaton Franciscan Medical Group Lipidology Clinic is here to help.

A lipid disorder or metabolic syndrome increases your risk for heart disease, including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), stroke, high blood pressure (hypertension) and other problems. People with high cholesterol need to manage their health to lower their risk of heart disease.

Even some individuals who have “normal” cholesterol numbers may be at risk because of other factors. You may be at risk if you have:
  • A family history of high cholesterol
  • A family history of diabetes
  • A personal history of heart disease
  • A personal history of high blood sugars
  • Heart failure or heart arrhythmia
  • Hard-to-treat, high-risk cholesterol levels
  • Cholesterol risk factors such as abnormal HDL levels, high LDL levels, high triglycerides, smoking and high blood pressure
  • Personal risk factors such as being overweight, high alcohol use or lack of exercise.
For a complete checklist of risks, see our Lipidology overview and checklist.

How can The Lipidology Clinic make a difference for a healthier future?

At The Lipidology Clinic, a team of health professionals who specialize in lipidology will identify your health issues and work with you to decide what treatment works best. This might include medication and/or lifestyle changes such as exercise, diet and stress reduction.

The earlier you are diagnosed and begin a treatment plan, the better your chances are for having and keeping a healthy lifestyle and preventing future problems.
