Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - Franklin Receives NICHE Designation

Wheaton Franciscan Senior Health services is proud to announce that Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - Franklin is officially a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care of Healthsystem Elders) certified hospital.

Participating in NICHE, through the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at the New York University College of Nursing, will allow Franklin health care leaders and staff to access tools to improve the care of the older adult including education and CEUs, live and archived webinars as well as participate in list-serves and interface with other NICHE sites in our system and nationwide.

“This has been an exciting journey and we have great ideas on including the community, the staff and patients to improve the care of the older adult at Franklin,” said Linda Denison Bub MSN, RN, GCNS-BC, Director of Senior Services for Wheaton. “Roughly 60% of our patients are over the age of 65 in our medical unit and ICU, so this designation and training is imperative to the wellbeing of these patients and their families. It also promotes satisfaction of the staff by arming them with tools to better care for this population.”

To earn this recognition, Senior Health and hospital leaders completed a Leadership Training Program in November 2012. The process included: a hospital services self-evaluation, education for the team and an action plan that had to be submitted and approved by the NICHE team.

The Franklin NICHE leadership team consisted of Sheila Gansemer, Vice President of Patient Care Services, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - Franklin; Linda Bub, Director of Senior Services, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare; and Noel Frederick, Medical Unit Staff Nurse, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - Franklin. In coming months, these leaders will be sharing more information with staff and leaders about the NICHE designation and its supportive action plan.
