Wheaton Franciscan - Elmbrook Memorial Receives Baby-Friendly Redesignation

Wheaton Franciscan - Elmbrook Memorial Campus met the Baby-Friendly USA 2014 Re-Designation requirements for a designation period of 2014-2019. The Baby Friendly Hospital initiative supports healthy breastfeeding practices throughout the world. Hospitals are awarded the "Baby Friendly Hospital" designation after undergoing an extensive accreditation process. Mothers who give birth at Baby Friendly hospitals are more likely to start and keep breastfeeding their babies exclusively for up to a year.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (“BFHI”) is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this prestigious international award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

To gain the award, a facility must undergo an on-site survey that is conducted after the hospital or birth center indicates readiness for assessment. Only after the facility has passed this rigorous assessment does it receive the designation as a “Baby-Friendly” birth facility. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstrated by quality processes.
