One in five health care dollars now spent on Diabetes care
The cost of diabetes has reached $218 billion in the U.S. – or $1 of every $5 spent on health care. The risk for death among people with diabetes is about two times that of people without diabetes. It can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney damage, and lower-limb amputation. But people with diabetes can lower the occurrence of these and other diabetes related complications by controlling blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids, thereby reducing the number of hospitalizations. The Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Diabetes Management program helps patients to self-manage their diabetes by providing them with the tools, support, and encouragement to understand and control this lifelong condition.
